Founding statement from The Devil’s Gift home page:
Thanks to Old Scratch I’ll be posting a reflection on something I find remarkable in and around my world most every Sunday morning.
And I have. One hundred and eighty five posts since July 2019.
Last week an old friend who happened to be The Devil’s Gift number one fan died suddenly. Killed in an auto accident. I’m stunned. Shocked. Speechless. Nothing else seems to matter this week.
I looked in and around my world for something to occupy my mind, something remarkable. I found nothing, except this in a reader’s comment on last Sunday’s post:
Speak only if it improves upon the silence. (Mahatma Gandhi)

I am so sorry for your loss! Such sudden death ‘takes our breath away’ … words as well! The pain too deep! May there be arms to hold you, a shoulder to lean on… let the tears fall!
Quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “You can’t lead a true life without suffering.” Hugs to you, my Friend.
Wise words… silence is an under appreciated healer… when my brother died suddenly, “Let it Be 🎼…” kept coming to me…a balm in troubled times.
Blessings to you, & thank you for sharing🙏🏼💓
I’m so awful damn sorry, dear brother. The deep love of a friend is wonderfully special. Their leaving such grief. It’s like the anchor chain breaking and the past passing away.
With a slight turn of meaning, yes, there are no words. And even the sacred silence is burden enough in this very painful experience. I am wholeheartedly pained knowing of your best friend’s sudden passing. May peace be yours as you remember your dynamic co-created legacy, and may your tears “water the garden of your soul” as they also express unspeakable grief. I send sincerest Love to you and Paula.
I really like Stewart’s imagery of an anchor chain breaking and the life we know seems to be away. Thank God so many of us do remain close at hand with our bow lines still lashing us together. So sorry for your loss friend.
How can this be, this loss that can never happen? This friend is woven into the very fibers of your being and you will quote him, treasure shared language, humor, cards, letters, notes or music; he will tug at you over and over again in the midst of shared experience and work. Stillness is your refuge. Sending Love to you and Paula.
So hard when death is not expected. I think your friend would want to be remembered in laughter. When someone leaves us all we have are the memories and I pray they bring you comfort.
Peace be with you
You give us comfort and thought, now we are here throwing the blanket of care over you. Your friend is doing this too, right here…right now.
Every days is a precious gift. We are all equal in the eyes of God. On earth, we are all equally vulnerable to the challenges each day brings. Live, live and cherish the time you have together.
